Overview of Music
with Mr. Boisclair
Students work on a wide variety of musical skills. Each skilled is aligned to the National Core Arts Standards.
Here are some brief examples of each standard:
Pre-K - improvise vocalizations with their singing voice, building short rhythm patterns with iconic notation
K and 1 - building short rhythm patterns using standard notation.
2 - improvise short patterns on xylophones using solfege syllables.
3 and 4 - improvise/compose melodic patterns on recorders, building chord progressions on ukuleles.
Pre-K - explore awareness of musical contrasts (high/low; loud/soft; long/short)
K and 1 - singing folk songs to accompany circle games, play rhythmic patterns on a variety of percussion instruments
2 - sing folk songs to accompany circle dances, play melodic patterns on xylophones
3 and 4 - perform vocal and instrumental music with expression and technical accuracy
Pre-K - choose favorite songs for class warm-up
K - 2
3 and 4 -
All grades make connections of music to other subjects and the outside world. All students are encouraged to "bring" songs home and perform to family/friends.
Pre-K - 2 - Relate counting songs to math skills. Perform finger-plays/movements to accompany singing.
3 and 4 - Dictation of learned rhythms/notes
