Students learn through singing, playing, and listening in music classes. We learn how to create and perform musical ideas and how to use notation to organize and document our ideas. All lessons reflect the creative process which is the framework of the National Arts Standards.
CREATE PERFORM RESPOND CONNECT
Creating: Students will use singing , body percussion and musical instruments to create and interpret musical selections. Students will improvise (spontaneously create) both rhythmic and melodic examples. Students will use notation to write original rhythmic and melodic examples. Students will also express musical ideas and interpretations through movement/ dance.
Performing: Students will perform by singing and playing : recorder, xylophone ,and percussion instruments. Students will perform a variety of genres both alone and with others. Students will demonstrate their ability to read and make meaning of musical notation through performance. Students will enhance their performances by including expressive qualities to make their performance artful and original.
Responding: Students will demonstrate their musical understanding through their observations following listening. Students will listen to a variety of genres of music: Rock, Classical, Blues, Country, New age, etc. Students will also be able to give critical feedback to their fellow students following in-class and school performances. Students will also critique their own performance to inform areas of strength and weakness. Use of musical vocabulary, and thoughtful explanation of what they hear will demonstrate the meaning that they bring to music.
Connecting: The various genres of art are connected in many ways. Often one form of art inspires the creative process in another area. A poem may inspire a symphonic composition. (Example: Camille Saint Saen's: Danse Macabre) Also there are many connections with history and cultures. Students will be encouraged to explore the many ways that music is influenced by culture, historic period, geographic location, and world events. Music is a very unique way to explore humanity and making connections with students can be a powerful way to learn about our world and the peoples of the world.
